Pancreatic Cancer Europe is a European multi-stakeholder platform which aims at bringing together experts from all over Europe including academics, physicians, politicians, patient groups, journalists and industry. The platform was created in 2014 and became a legal entity in 2016. We work towards the development of targeted European and national policies on pancreatic cancer, to raise awareness of the condition at national level, to improve its diagnosis, to foster data collection, and to support research.

ADMINISTRATION OF THE PLATFORM

Pancreatic Cancer Europe GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING

The general assembly meeting gave a general overview of the activities realized until mid-2018, and to discuss the policy strategy of Pancreatic Cancer Europe. Several important decisions were taken, including the election of the 5th Board Member, and on the approval of the 2017 financial report.

WELCOME TO DR. SORIN BARBU

As announced, following the stepping down of one of our board members, the re-elected board opened a call for application to become the 5th board member of the association. During the 2018 Annual General Meeting, Sorin Barbu was elected to replace Matthias Löhr.

UPDATE ON PANCREATIC CANCER EUROPE’S ACTIVITIES

LAUNCH OF THE PCE HEATMAP

The Pancreatic Cancer Europe heatmap was officially launch in April. You can find it here for a first glance!

Conceived as a powerful tool to compare the pancreatic cancer patients’ situation in each European country, the heatmap provides information on awareness; on the national policy, on diagnosis, registries, state of research, state of treatments and available public health data on the disease.

Our heatmap features both European- and national-level information on pancreatic cancer

PCE RESEARCH ROUNDTABLE DURING ESMO GI

Once again, Pancreatic Cancer Europe proudly endorsed ESMO-GI 2018, which took place from 20th to 23rd June in Barcelona. This 20th edition put pancreatic cancer high on the agenda, and Pancreatic Cancer Europe promoted awareness and information on this disease during the Congress.

Barcelona, 22 June 2018

This year, Pancreatic Cancer Europe decided to hold a special roundtable on the research on liquid biopsy.

Liquid biopsy is becoming a hot topic also in pancreatic cancer as both incidence and mortality of this disease is increasing dramatically in Europe and USA. The earlier pancreatic cancer is diagnosed (primary tumours and progressions of the disease) the more promising will be the benefits for the patients in terms of treatment options and outcomes.

The roundtable participants identified the barriers that pancreatic cancer poses in the implementation of liquid biopsy in patient management in comparison to other fields, as well as discussed and prioritised the research gaps and needs to be covered. By comparing the achievements with liquid biopsy in other cancer fields, scientists and clinicians hope to learn and improve liquid biopsy research in pancreatic cancer.

On 22 June, Pancreatic Cancer Europe gathered give eminent speakers on the topic of liquid biopsy research and its potential for pancreatic cancer research.

A report will be issued following the recommendations and the discussions from the exchanges.

ESMO GI COVERAGE

Pancreatic Cancer Europe was present during ESMO GI in Barcelona!

For the second year, our collaboration with ESMO GI led to a full coverage by the association of the Congress. A Pancreatic Cancer Europe booth was set up, and showcased the heatmap as well as provided information on the disease to the congress delegates.

We are looking forward to having more booths like this one in the coming months!

INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIP FOR ACTION AGAINST CANCER (IPAAC)

Prof Carrato attended the kick-off meeting of the iPAAC, the European Commission’s third joint action on cancer control. Pancreatic cancer is now an important part of the focused topics of iPAAC. Prof. Carrato had the opportunity to present the Pancreatic Cancer Europe heatmap to the attendees.
